| This
book was dedicated to young school boys and girls uprooted from Kashmir
Valley whom the author visited in the winter of 1991 and again in 1995
in refugee tents in the camps in Jammu (India). Their bright and forlorn
looks are a haunting memory to the author and the rest of us. The author
has donated the profits from the sale of the book for the educational benefit
of these boys and girls.
The book was intended to be an account of Mr. Chaku's life interrelated with changes in the social and political conditions of people that occurred in the state during this period. It is still so except that it has been expanded to include an analysis of the factors, their nature and main source from which they originated, that brought about the civil commotion in the state in 1990. Significantly, the last chapter seeks to make a statement about what the future holds for Indian democracy, its secular and pluralistic character in particular, in terms of the impact on it of a successful resolution or otherwise of the strife in the state. Enquiries for the purchase of the book may be forwarded to Squsba@aol.com or to the publisher. |
