(Shankracharya Temple, 6,200 feet above sea level and 1,000 feet above
ground level) is on the top of a hillock in Srinagar, very close to the
Dal Gate. It was originally constructed by Sandiman (2629-2664 B.C.) and
rebuilt by Gopaditya (426-365 B.C.). It is a Shiva temple and inside it
there is a circular chamber. The sanctum contains a big lingam.
The temple is now named after the great philosopher and teacher, Sri Shankracharya.
