Subject: Milk Supply Project at Mishriwala Public School
Dear Community Members,
Namaskar!
Most of us should be aware of the severe malnutrition prevalent
among the children living in the refugee camps in Jammu. To address
this malady, a few caring individuals based in California started a
pilot program early last year, to provide milk to children studying
in grades 6 to 10 at the school in Purkhoo Camp, which has been a
successful project.
Our success in Purkhu Camp, has encouraged us to extend the project
to the Public School in Mishriwala Camp, starting December, 2008.
The school was founded by one Mr. Roshan Lal Bhat, a resident of
Mishriwala Camp, several years ago for the benefit of KP children
from Mishriwala Camp. Because of funding constraints, the intent is
to limit the project to children studying in grades 1 to 5 including
those in nursey. There are currently 150 children in these classes,
and the cost of providing milk for a period of eight months (schools
in Jammu remain closed in June and July for summer break, and
classes are suspended during annual exams. conducted in March &
April) is about Rs. 1,23,000 ( about $2,800, based on current
exchange rates). The cost figures are based on the numbers available
from the project at the school in Purkhoo Camp.
Since the number of children at the school in Mishriwala is almost
double the number at Purkhoo, it will not be possible to limit
raising of funds to a limited number of donors, as has been the case
with running the project at Purkhoo. It is therefore, my earnest
appeal to you and other members of the community to extend your help
in starting the project at Mishriwala, which is indeed for a noble
cause. Since we have adopted the policy of a minimum donation of
$200 for the project at Purkhoo, we would like to continue that
policy also for the Mishriwala project.
Your early response would be greatly appreciated, as I am planning
to depart for India on September 21. Should you have any questions
about the program, please contact me at: 510-790-4751 (home);
510-299-8627 (cell).
Regards & Best wishes,
Pran Kaul
