Anupam Somnath Wali

October 12, 1951 - September 19, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather - Anupam Somnath Wali.

Anupam was born, raised, and educated in the sciences before meeting his better half, Neelam. Together, they were married for over four decades, building an extraordinary home, family, business, and community of connected friends. They were the epitome of a life well-lived.

Known for his love of conversation, a hot cup of tea, and lending a helping hand, Anupam was a dedicated member of the Kashmiri Pandit and Indian American communities for nearly four decades. He was a proud member of the India Association of Greater Boston (IAGB), serving as the organization’s President from 2003 to 2005. He was also a fixture with the India Society of Worcester, Hindi Manch, United India Association, Saheli Boston, and the Kashmiri Overseas Association. Within his local community in Billerica, he served on the Zoning Board of Appeals and as a volunteer with the Billerica Lions Club.

Anupam earned his Ph.D. in Microbiology from M.S. University of Baroda in Gujarat, India, and moved across the ocean to complete his postdoctoral research at Temple University and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

He will be remembered for many, many things but most of all, for the incredible friend he was, the relationships he built and nourished, and the enveloping hugs that embodied his resonant warmth.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Neelam; daughters Ambika Wali (and Manish) Patel of Winchester, Anjali Wali of Watertown, and Nisha (and Ankit) Koul of Arlington; and his grandchildren Jaya, Kavi, and Suri Patel. He is also survived by his brother, Bushan Lal (and Sarla) Wali of New Delhi, India.

Anupam also leaves behind a broad extended family of cousins and in-laws whom he loved dearly, including his brother-in-law Vipin Khushu and sisters-in-law Sushma Kaul and Kamini Bhat, along with her two children — Vineet (and Misha) Bhat and Neeraj (and Gretchen Phillips) Bhat.

Vijay and I are deeply shocked and saddened to learn about the passing of our dear friend, Anupam Wali Ji. We have known Neelam Ji and Anupam Ji for decades, and our families have shared many cherished memories together. During his posting in Wisconsin, we often met over weekends, enjoying each other’s company and laughter-filled gatherings.

Anupam Ji was always a delight to be around — warm, kind, positive, and ever ready with a smile. His passion for our Kashmiri community was remarkable. In the early years of KOA, when the organization was still young and growing, Anupam Ji played a pivotal role in its expansion and strength. His dedication and commitment to community service left a lasting mark that will be remembered for years to come.

Those who knew him will fondly remember his infectious smile, his booming laughter, and his unwavering devotion to spreading love and kindness. He had a rare gift for lifting spirits and making everyone around him feel valued and joyful.

Neelam Ji, please accept our heartfelt condolences. We pray that Bhagwan Shiva bestow moksha upon the departed atman and give enough strength and fortitude to you and your family to cope with this loss of a young life.

Heartfelt condolences to Neelam, his children, his siblings and all family and friends. Although our interections with Anupam Ji were mostly during the KOA July 4th Camps, yet the warmth exuded was like meeting an old friend. His generosity of sprit and great friendly gestures will always be a part of my memories of our time well spent. He’s left too early and wish his family much strength during this difficult time. He will be sorely missed by everyone, including all of us in the Kashmiri community.
