Dr. Maharaj K. Raina
Date of passing: 2026-01-10

It is with grief in our hearts we share that Dr. Maharaj Krishen Raina, fondly known as Bhaiya Ji or Rajaji, passed away peacefully in New Jersey on January 10, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., surrounded by his dearest loved ones. He was 83 years old.
Born on May 25, 1942, in Srinagar, Kashmir, he was the beloved son of Chana Joo and
Dhanvati Raina. He was among the most genuinely kind and graceful people one could have
the privilege of knowing.
Bhaiya Ji pursued higher education with distinction, earning a Ph.D. from Banaras Hindu
University, and later completing his postdoctoral studies at Columbia University after moving to
the United States. He also held a Doctorate of Homeopathy. He went on to build a long and
respected career at Johnson & Johnson, where he worked for 40 years and was widely admired for his dedication, integrity, and strong work ethic.
For more than four decades, Bhaiya Ji made his home in Branchburg, New Jersey, a place he deeply enjoyed and where he built lasting memories with family and friends. He was married to his devoted wife, Lalita Raina, whom he lovingly called Lalaay, for almost 60 years. They shared a beautiful life together rooted in love, laughter, and family. He remained actively engaged in his community, serving as a president of the Indian Association of Somerset County, New Jersey.
Bhaiya Ji was survived by his loving wife Lalita, his beloved children Kapil, Amrita, Priya, and
Samir, and his cherished grandchildren Karan, Uma, Sachin, and Anika, all of whom brought
him immense joy and pride. He was also a loving mentor and dear friend to his many nieces
and nephews.
In addition to the time he treasured with family, Bhaiya Ji found great joy in life’s simple
pleasures. He loved photography, mystery novels, Sudoku, and he took particular delight in a good cup of coffee. He often spoke fondly of his time in Banaras, which always held a special place in his heart.
Above all, he was known for his profound love and devotion to his family. Loving, caring,
hardworking, and delightfully goofy, Bhaiya Ji brought warmth, laughter, and quiet steadiness into the lives of all who knew him. In a world that so often rewarded noise and display, he remained gentle without being weak and thoughtful without being self-important. His decency was never performative; it was simply who he was. His presence was a source of comfort, and his memory will remain a lasting blessing to his family and friends.
Funeral and memorial service details will be shared at a later time.
In grief,

I am deeply saddened to hear about passing away of Kishenji (his pet name). He was the last man to talk to his best friend Papa Bhan ( my deceased brother) before latter’s departure 50 years ago. Growing up in Drabiyar, I remember Kishenji as a very gentle and humble human being. We spent a few weeks together at Benara Hindu University in 1963 before I shifted to Chandigarh. I met him occasionally at my brother’s place in Philadelphia in early 70’s during my trips from Canada. I regret not meeting him in the later years. I used to play field hockey with his two older twin brothers Chaman Lal and Markham Lal in late 50’s. They were all excellent swimmers including Kishenji which impressed me as a kid learning to swim at the Drabiyar Ghat of River Jhelum.
We have just lost a very decent human being; deepest condolences to you Lalita ji and the whole family from me and my two sisters and brother.
Heartfelt condolences dear Amrita, Kapilji and the entire family. May the departed soul attain moksha.
In thoughts and prayers...Rajni and Satish Jain, Manav and Shweta.
Omg! What a shocker! Such a humble, caring, smiling, and loving person. Always respectful. Always cordial. Our heartfelt condolences to his loving family. Maharaj Jee was genuinely the nicest person we met. In his passing, Kashmiri community lost a jewel. May he attain ‘moksha’ and may god bless the family.

We were shocked to learn of Raina Sahib passing. He was such a fine gentleman. We have known him closely for over thirty years. Such a gracious host with a wry sense of humor. Many a discussion I have had with him over the years. I have never seen him get animated and argumentative. Such a sweet person. Words fail me.
We send our deepest and heartfelt condolences to Lalita ji and the rest of the family. We wish Rains sahib to attain eternal moksha.
