Dear KOA Family,
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Durga Durani Kaw Ji in Houston, Texas, on March 11, 2025. Dr. Kaw was a pioneer in her lifetime, blazing a trail for women in medicine. She was a gold medalist throughout her academic career and one of the first female OB/GYN physicians from Kashmir.
Dr. Kaw was kind-hearted, with an unassuming personality, yet possessed impeccable willpower and extraordinary dedication to her family and profession. She leaves behind a legacy of excellence in medicine. She touched the lives of many and was loved and respected by all. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Kishori Lal Kaw; together, they were the first Kashmiri doctor couple in Kashmir.
She is survived by her elder son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Dinkar Kaw and Dr. Meenakshi Kaul Kaw, in Ohio (can be reached at 567-868-4759, dinkar.kaw@utoledo.edu), her younger son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Madhukar Kaw and Dr. Praveena Singh-Kaw, in Houston (can be reached at 713-302-4813, mkaw5563@yahoo.com), and her granddaughters, Meesha Kaw, Dr. Kaveeta Kaw, and Dr. Anita Kaw.

Dr. Durga Durani Kaw, indeed was a trail blazing pioneer woman of her times. It is women like her, on whose tiny but brave shoulders, women like myself and others on this page and in India and world were able to rise in our professions. Women like Dr. Durga Durani Kaw were the building foundations of Women Awareness and Jagrati not only in India but worldwide. I met Dr. Durga more than twenty years ago, here in Houston. Those days she used to come to Kashmiri functions, along with her very warm and kind son, Dr Madhukar Kaw, her very accomplished daughter-in-law, Dr. Praveena Kaw, and her two lovely very young granddaughters. I was so much in awe when I heard that Durga Ji was the Medical doctor, that too from Kashmir, it was unheard of, from women of her era of Kashmir. In every social gathering those days, I used to make sure, I would speak to her always for few minutes, and greet her with deference and lots of respect. She was not only history making professional woman, but was also very mild, polite and an extremely graceful lady. Her physical appearance was further Soné pé Suhaga, meaning she was also very beautiful. Women of India and Women of World owe a lot to pathfinder, vanguard women like Dr. Durga Durani Kaw. Look at her family, how many doctors she nurtured. Unbelievable. Passing away of Dr. Durga Durani Kaw is not only a great loss to Kaw Family but a great loss to professional women of the world, for whom Dr. Durga Durani Kaw was a de facto Role Model.
