Language preservation is a top priority for the KOA Heritage preservation program. This quarter, we developed a long-term vision for the Kashmiri language preservation initiative and presented it to the KOA Board for alignment and support. Last year, KOA Zone 5 initiated free Kashmiri language classes that saw many children and adults benefit from the lessons created by the instructors. These classes were integrated into the National Language program under the Heritage Committee to make them accessible across all regions. We offer Kashmiri Immersion Sessions to create opportunities for learners to practice speaking the language with others at similar fluency levels. This quarter, we introduced the conversational method for teaching and held a few sessions for basic language skills.
Spotlight on Preservation:
The 2025 foundation phase is well underway, using a WhatsApp group named Käshúr Hechav to communicate session dates, times, and Zoom links. In addition, a dedicated Google Group is used to send calendar invites and email reminders to enrolled participants. We are working on a fixed weekly curriculum learning cycle focused on building basic listening and speaking skills. This will occur on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Sunday of each month at 4 pm PST/6 pm CST. This cohort runs until July 27th, 2025.
Get Involved:
We would appreciate your participation as learners or volunteers as teachers. We are developing structured lesson plans and can offer guidance to volunteers on the conversational teaching method. You may search the Language Resources section on the KOA website, featuring audio pronunciations, practice materials, and interactive learning tools.
